“I don't want to be thought of as the "girl who was shot by the Taliban" but the "girl who fought for education." This is the cause to which I want to devote my life."- Malala Yousafzai

When school starts in September, 7th graders will read I am Malala (Young Reader's Edition). Malala is the story of a girl who risked her life fighting for the right to an education. Even though Malala was shot and nearly died, she continues to fight for education rights for all today.  While both Malala is commonly viewed as a hero today, she was viewed as a troublemaker within her own societies. While reading Malala's story this fall, we'll ponder:

  •  Why do certain people choose unpopular, but moral, stances on the issues of the day in order to promote beneficial change?

  • How can the wrongs of society be righted?

  • How can compassion for others help in negotiating difficult situations?

  • How can we define courage?

Your summer assignments, which I'll ask you to upload at the end of the first full week of school, are as follows:

1. Choose one of the questions above and answer it. In a Google Doc, write a paragraph (8-10 sentences in length).  Please share the doc with me (swalsh@dwight.global).

2. Read this article about herd behavior and answer the questions according to the instructions.

3. Read this article about empathy and answer the questions according to the instructions.

Have a great summer! I look forward to meeting you soon!

Welcome, students.  and I am very much looking forward to working with each of you! This is my 17th year teaching literature and writing. I am especially excited to be back working with students at Dwight, the place where I began my career. Together, we will create a dynamic, warm learning community during the upcoming school year.
