Rising 9th Graders

Summer Reading Assignment
Meet Your Teacher

I am Ms Rudež, and I am looking forward to meeting you all in Grade 9 English soon.  You can email me at vrudez@dwight.global.

Enjoy your summer adventures - whether through the pages of a book, or in real-life wherever you are!

Here are 3 genres to explore over the summer to prepare for next year’s English 9.

All written work should be completed in separate Google Docs (except for assignment 3).  Please make sure your Google Docs are shared with me (vrudez@dwight.global), and be prepared to submit your Google Docs in the first week of school.

Enjoy and learn!

1. Read an autobiography of your choice.  If you need help selecting an autobiography, please email me!

In a Google Doc, type a short paragraph (8-10 sentences) explaining your response to the autobiography.  Think about what a reader can gain from reading an autobiography.  What stories did the author include?  How did the author reveal aspects of his or her personality?

Recommended title: Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, A Life in Balance by Simone Biles (2018) - ISBN-10  9780310759485 (or another of your choice).

2. Read one of the below fiction novels (with an American-Iranian narrator).

As you read, consider: How do you learn about the main character?

In a Google Doc, keep a quote journal.  Select 5 -6 significant quotations that give you insight into the main character, and write a brief comment about each quotation.

Option i:

Darius the Great Is Not Okay (2019)

by Adib Khorram ISBN 13 - 978-0525552970

OR

Option ii:

The Authentics (2021)

by Abdi Nazemian - ISBN-13   978-0062486462

3. Do a movie study project on one of the below films about Greek mythology.

Create a visual poster (by hand or electronically) that serves as a guide to the Greek myth behind the movie. Use simple symbols or images, captions and an organizational form of your choice. You can use ‘sketchnotes’, a flow chart, timeline or mind-map as possible ways to organize the key points, names and plot.  Be selective with the characters and plot events you choose - Greek myths are well known for difficult names and numerous character entities!

Option i: Troy (2004) directed by Wolfgang Petersen

Option ii:  Disney’s Hercules (1997) directed by Ron Clements and John Musker

Option iii:  Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)  directed by Chris Columbus
